Temporary settings to maximize battery life

If your battery is close to dying and you need to keep using your device, try temporarily changing these settings to save your remaining battery life. Don’t forget to turn these features back on when you’re able to charge your device again.

This information applies only to devices running Android 5.0 and higher.

You can use battery saver on your device to help improve battery life. You can also set your device to turn on battery saver automatically based on how much battery your device has remaining.

Keep in mind that turning battery saver on limits vibration, location services, and most background data. For example, you won’t be able to use Google Maps Navigation while using battery saver.

To turn battery saver on or off or to set your device to turn on battery saver automatically, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Device,” touch Battery.
  3. Touch the menu icon Menu, then touch Battery saver.
  4. Move the switch to On. The notification and navigation bars at the top and bottom of your screen will turn orange when battery saver is turned on.
  5. To set your device to turn on battery saver automatically based on your remaining battery life, touch Turn on automatically and select “at 5% battery” or “at 15% battery.”

If you’re in an area with weak coverage or don’t need to use your mobile network, switch to Airplane mode. This way, your phone doesn’t have to use up the battery trying to stay connected.

To turn on Airplane mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Wireless & networks,” touch More.
  3. Turn on “Airplane mode.”

If you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, but want to keep your mobile data turned off to save battery life, you can turn on Wi-Fi only while in Airplane mode:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Wireless & networks,” touch Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on”Wi-Fi.”

You can save battery life by turning off Bluetooth when you’re not using it by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Wireless & networks,” touch Bluetooth.
  3. Slide the switch to Off.

Make sure to turn Bluetooth back on by sliding the switch to On when you want to use a Bluetooth device.

You can temporarily turn on battery saving location by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Personal,” touch Location.
  3. Touch Mode.
  4. Select Battery saving.

Make sure to change your Location setting back to one that uses GPS if you want to use apps that need to determine your location, like Google Maps.

You can temporarily turn on battery saving location mode to save battery life by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu  on your device.
  2. Under “Personal,” touch Location.
  3. Slide the switch next to “Location” to Off.
  4. Select Battery saving mode.

Make sure to slide the switch back to On when you want to use apps that need to determine your location.
